Tell us more about the challenge of the project.What is the problem you are trying to solve? Why is the problem significant?
According to data from the Goiás Fire Department, approximately 4,000 wild animals were rescued in 2017. In the state of Goiás, there are few suitable facilities for rehoming these animals after they have been rescued, due to the deforestation of the Cerrado, and in some cases it is necessary to travel more than 600km to release these animals.
Our challenge is to build a captivity for the gentle release of wild animals from the Cerrado rescued by the Niquelândia Goiás Municipal Environment Department, according to the model developed by CETAS - IBAMA. The partnership also consists of the approval of an area for the release of these animals, the first to be approved by IBAMA in the north of Goiás.
In order to release animals rescued with some kind of injury, they need a period of adaptation in captivity in their natural environments before they can be released. There is currently no suitable place for releasing animals rescued by the competent authorities in the municipality. Niquelândia is the largest municipality in the state of Goiás, with 9,843.247 km², and has a high concentration of wild animals.
Tell us more about the proposed solution of the project.How will it work?
The project will operate through a partnership between the Niquelândia Goiás Municipal Department of the Environment, the Goiás Wildlife Animal Screening Center - CETAS (a partnership in the process of approving the area) and the Tiradentes Educational Institute (IET). The IET owns an area of 113 hectares of native Cerrado, where agro-ecological research is carried out, called Sítio Bagagem. This site is a haven for wild animals and has a large concentration of Cerrado forests. At Sítio Bagagem, the rescued animals will be placed in a shelter planned by CETAS - IBAMA, where they will be treated with environmental enrichment techniques to rehabilitate them and integrate them into their habitat upon release.
