The Floresta Cheia Environmental Conservation Institute was created on October 23, 2019 in the city of Goiânia-GO by biologists committed to conserving the environment and all the species that are part of it. The Institute aims to promote and carry out actions aimed at environmental conservation, with a view to restoring and protecting ecosystem and environmental services.
The Bicudo (Sporophila maximiliani) is a critically endangered bird species whose free-living population is estimated at less than 150 individuals. This scenario is the result of a historical process of habitat loss and, above all, hunting and trafficking, an illegal trade driven by popular interest in the beautiful melodious song that the species displays. In order to prevent the extinction of this species, Floresta Cheia is carrying out a project to reintroduce Bicudos into the wild, with the aim of re-establishing free-living populations in the Cerrado of Goiás, an area where the species historically occurred. Among the activities planned, environmental education is central, since mobilizing the community is essential to avoid a recurrence of the problem with hunting, favoring the success of the project.
Illegal hunting and trade is a problem that affects not only the Bicudos, but also several other species of wildlife. In order to gain popular support for the project and raise awareness in the community about the harms of hunting, we have produced an illustrated textbook that addresses the issues of biodiversity conservation, the main threats and how and why to reverse this scenario. The book seeks to sensitize children in particular, as we believe they have the power to spread knowledge at home and take action in the future.
The textual content of the book has already been prepared and is ready for the next stages: layout and illustration. Illustration in particular is a key factor in the production of the book, as it is through illustration that we are able to capture the attention and interest of the target audience. In addition, we are looking for a realistic representation of the species and habitat, which allows us to disseminate information in a way that is true to reality. Finally, the last stage consists of printing some copies for distribution, starting in the release area. The funds raised through donations will be used both to hire a service provider for the first two stages and to purchase the final printed copies.
